Oh-Damm

Oh-Damm

This game was the product of a weekend long game jam. The game jam was created by me and my friends. It was for only us where we set up the rules for us to follow. The only thing predetermened was the date and the length of the jam. The rest would be decided by random. Theme, setting, genre, engine, all of it all random!

After the game jam, Oh-Damm had been borned. A rouge like/shooter space game with the theme "revers saying."

My role was coming up and implement the core systems and mechanics. From the inspiration of the reverse saying "what kills you makes you stronger," I made the main mechanic of the game.

It goes like this. When you take damage of what tries to kill you, your stats increases for the better. Your bullets give more damage, your dash transports you longer, your bullet range is longer, and your bullet spawn is faster. However, when taking damage, the life lost is dropped from the player character to end up somewhere in the level. Ready to be picked up again. When picking the lost life up again lowers your stats for the worse. You could say what heals you makes you weaker.

Loose life, pick it up again

The more life taken, the stronger you are.

(Notice the accelerated spawning rate in the gif above)

I thought it was an interesting idea and the team thought so as well with playing back and forth of the two sides. Do you want to pick up the lost life to be more safe but weaker? or do you ignore it to be less safe but stronger?

Mine Spawner

If not destoyed, this little devil will continue spitting up mines around the level.

(If ther are five mines out, spawned by itself, then it will stop and wait until the number of mines goes below five.)

Mines

Just small annoying minse waiting to detonate.

(Anything can trigger them and they also deal damage to the enemy)

Explosive Barrel

These explosives has a long range and will not show mercy to anyone or anything

(Anything that touches these will detonate them. No matter if it is an enemy or your own bullet.)

The Laser

This machine shoots its laser and will deal damage over time.

(The laser rotates and shoots with variables that can be tweaked by the designer for the perfect rythm.)
